THE OPPORTUNITY AWAITS YOU

 

The Carpenter is responsible for a wide variety of tasks supporting routine and preventative maintenance, minor renovations, millwork fabrication and installation. This position performs journeyperson quality work in the maintenance, repair, construction, alteration, forming, framing, and finishing within Division buildings, sites, and grounds. The Carpenter works as part of the Facilities team to support safe, healthy, clean, and functional schools and environments for students, staff, and communities to learn and work.

 

Hours of work are Monday to Friday, 7:30 am - 4:00 pm. 

 

WHAT WILL YOU DO

  • Repair, construct, install, remodel, and modify buildings and associated structures including but not limited to floors, walls, ceilings, concrete forms, doors and hardware, windows, frames, furniture, stairs, ramps, railings, cupboards, roofs, gutters, flashings, counters, paneling, cabinets, lockers, and fixed seating.
  • Erect or alter bathroom and wall partitions, blackboards, bulletin boards, etc.
  • Perform skilled millwork involving construction, finishing, and repairing of buildings, doors, and other building related items.
  • Prepare and interpret drawings, plans, sketches and blueprints of construction and repair projects.
  • Prepare time estimates for all types of carpentry work and order materials within Division guidelines.
  • Assist in playground maintenance and repair, cement work, fence repair, and other outside maintenance work.
  • Keep abreast of all safety and building codes, asbestos laws and guidelines, and material safety data sheets (MSDS) specific to the products and supplies used in the performance of duties.
  • Remain proficient in the use and maintenance of fixed and handheld power tools used in the carpentry trade, keeping all hand, power tools and equipment in good working order.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work area, appropriately clean the general work area after performance of all jobs, and load/unload supplies and materials.
  • Complete all necessary documentation and paperwork.
  • Perform such other duties as may be required to meet organizational needs as assigned.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

 

Apply today if you meet the following requirements:

  • Grade 12 or equivalent.
  • Valid Journeyperson Certificate in the carpentry trade.
  • Three (3) to five (5) years of practical experience in commercial carpentry installations and maintenance.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s license.
  • Full working knowledge of the standard methods, materials, tools, and equipment of the Carpentry trade and ability to apply knowledge to a high standard.
  • Knowledge of relevant building codes applicable to schools and other public buildings.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade and ability to maintain safe working conditions within a school environment.
  • Knowledge of Workplace Hazardous Materials and Information Systems (WHMIS).
  • Ability to read, interpret and execute construction drawings and specifications, understand, and execute oral and written instructions, interpret blueprints, perform layout work, and calculate quantities of materials.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills and ability to create and maintain professional and productive working relationships with others including Facilities Department colleagues and school staff.
  • Ability to utilize email, process maintenance requisitions and order supplies using Division-standard technology devices and applications (primarily Microsoft Office).
  • Effective problem solving, decision making, organizing, and planning skills.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple demands and effectively manage time and to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Physical ability to carry out all responsibilities as outlined under duties and responsibilities.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a satisfactory Criminal Record Check for the duration of employment.

This position has a Market Wage Supplement of $1.25 per hour in addition to the posted hourly rate.
