The Casual Special Education Assistant works under the direction of the administrator, classroom teacher, and learning resource teacher to provide a range of support services to assist students in five key areas; providing personal care, life skills and experiences, academic support, alternative communication, and behavioural regulation supports as required by students and directed by teachers, to promote engagement, participation and success in school.

WHAT WILL YOU DO

  • Assist the classroom teacher to support diversity, equity, and inclusion for all.
  • Assist students who require support in the development of gross and fine motor abilities and functional life skills by demonstration, physical assistance, and manipulation.
  • Support students with personal care needs including, but not limited to, feeding, personal hygiene, mobility, toileting, and transportation.
  • Promote, facilitate, and model positive behaviour interventions and supports to encourage, support, reinforce, and facilitate appropriate and positive student behaviour and social interactions.
  • Assist in de-escalating potentially harmful situations and assists the classroom teacher with crisis resolution and behaviour management.
  • Support student medical needs as required in accordance with division administrative procedures. This may include the administration of medication, monitoring blood sugar levels, and interpreting student’s needs.
  • Support students with diverse intellectual and physical abilities.
  • Support specialized para-medical accommodations for students approved by a medical practitioner to be performed by a non-medical person. 

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

 

Apply today if you meet the following requirements:

  • Grade 12 or equivalent.
  • Educational Assistant, Early Childhood Education, Continuing Care Assistant, or Disability Support Worker Certificate is preferred.
  • Professional Assault Response (PART) training and Transfer Lifting Repositioning (TLR) certification is preferred.
  • First Aid, CPR, and AED training is an asset.
  • Specialized training and/or experience in supporting individuals with differing abilities and needs is an asset.
  • Ability to perform the physical demands required for this position such as lifting students with ambulatory limitations/restrictions and attending to students requiring assistance with bathrooms or mobility.
  • Ability to work in a variety of environments and positions; extended time spent standing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, or supporting students at the ground level is required.
  • Ability to respond to students with severe opposition, aggressive and/or threatening behaviours such as hitting, kicking, spitting, biting, scratching, throwing of objects, and the use of inappropriate and/or threatening language.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a satisfactory Criminal Record Check for the duration of employment.
