The Head Facility Technician ensures that Division facilities and grounds provide safe, clean environments for learning and working and works collegially as part of both the school team and the Division-level Facilities team.  Key responsibilities include operating and maintaining heating plant systems, performing a broad range of preventive maintenance, general maintenance, repair and cleaning functions, identifying and documenting more significant work needed, supporting community user groups and leading the work of the school-based Facilities team.

 

Available locations include: Lakeview, Grant Road, and McDermid

WHAT WILL YOU DO

  • Supervise a team of Caretakers, Facility Technician, and/or Operations Mechanic and/or Small Engine Mechanic as applicable, setting out daily routines, and assisting in training/orienting new staff in work-related duties.
  • Operate and maintains steam or hot water boilers and other heating and cooling plant systems in accordance with government regulations and division procedures. Monitors and adjusts all gauges and chemical levels in the above systems as needed to ensure safe and efficient operations.
  • Inspect the building, lighting, and alarm systems to ensure they are in good working order and follows up as needed.
  • Adhere to all routine and preventative maintenance work conducted on all equipment, devices and furnishings as required by government agencies and Division procedures and records completed work in Asset Planner.
  • Perform cleaning duties with the use of hand and power tools, equipment and cleaning agents following standard daily and rotational cleaning schedules and verbal instruction.
  • Empty garbage and trash containers to exterior storage bins. May collect debris from school grounds, fence lines and parking lots, cut grass and maintain flowerbeds and shrubs in season.  Removes snow from entryways and sidewalks with shovels, blowers or brooms.
  • Perform minor maintenance and repairs to furniture, desks, tables, doors, closing mechanisms and related building furnishings, including but not limited to, groundskeeping, parts replacement, and regular building maintenance.
  • Oversee facilities used for rentals during evenings to ensure compliance with rental rules and regulations. Secures areas not in use, tidies areas after use and secures buildings by locking doors, windows and arming alarm systems. 

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • Minimum Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Valid 5th Class Power Engineering Certificate
  • Knowledge of cleaning procedures, supplies, and equipment.
  • Knowledge of Workplace Hazardous Materials and Information Systems (WHMIS).
  • Knowledge of mechanical, plumbing, electrical, fire and alarm systems with some diagnostic skills.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills, and the ability to create and maintain strong relationships with others.
  • Strong effective problem solving, decision making, organizing, and planning skills.
  • Strong time management skills with the ability to handle multiple demands and competing priorities.
  • Physical ability to carry out all caretaking duties as outlined under duties and responsibilities.
  • Ability to organize and lead assigned staff and act as a mentor in all aspects of building operations and caretaking.
  • Ability to utilize email, process maintenance requisitions and order supplies using Division-standard technology.
  • Ability to read and understand to comply with labels, instructions and safety messages or warnings for the safe and competent use of caretaking supplies and operation of equipment is essential.
  • Ability to perform preventative maintenance and minor maintenance/repair functions.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a satisfactory Criminal Record Check for the duration of employment.
