THE OPPORTUNITY AWAITS YOU
The HVAC/Boiler Technician is responsible for routine maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, balance and operation of a variety of heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems and controls, and energy conservation tasks. This position performs journeyperson quality work in the installation, service and repair of boilers and other HVAC systems and controls within Division buildings. The HVAC/Boiler Technician works as part of the Facilities team to support safe, healthy, clean, and functional schools and environments for students, staff, and communities to learn and work.
Hours of work are Monday to Friday, 7:30 am - 4:00 pm.
WHAT WILL YOU DO
- Diagnose and repair problems and/or failures in air conditioning, hydronic heating, steam boilers, forced air heating and ventilating, and refrigeration equipment.
- Proactively monitor heating, air conditioning, and ventilating systems and their components (e.g. gas piping, forced air heating units, boilers, building exhaust fans, ventilation units, switches, fuses, time clocks, steam traps, etc.) for the purpose of evaluating condition, identifying necessary repairs and recommending preventive maintenance.
- Perform routine and preventive maintenance (e.g. filter changes, gas pipe repairs, replacing switches and other components, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the ongoing functioning of heating, air conditioning, and ventilating systems.
- Perform boiler calibrations and combustion analysis.
- Perform seasonal overhauls and instructs repair teams in transition of systems from heating to cooling and vice versa.
- Order required materials to accurately and efficiently complete tasks within Division guidelines.
- Keep abreast of all safety and building codes, asbestos laws and guidelines, and material safety data sheets (MSDS) specific to the products and supplies used in the performance of duties.
- Remain proficient in the use and maintenance of fixed and handheld power tools used in the HVAC/Plumbing trade, keeping all hand, power tools and equipment in good working order.
- Maintain a clean and orderly work area, appropriately clean the general work area after performance of all jobs, and load/unload supplies and materials.
- Complete all necessary documentation and paperwork.
- Perform such other duties as may be required to meet organizational needs as assigned.
WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR
Apply today if you meet the following requirements:
- Grade 12 or equivalent.
- Valid Journeyperson Certificate in the plumbing or pipefitting trade and a valid General Gas Fitter with no restrictions.
- Three (3) to five (5) years of practical experience in commercial servicing and maintenance of commercial building boilers and HVAC systems.
- Valid Class 5 Operator’s license.
- Full working knowledge of methods, materials and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of heating, refrigeration and air conditioning equipment and plumbing systems
- Knowledge of relevant codes and regulations regarding air conditioning, heating, refrigeration, ventilating equipment, and plumbing systems applicable to educational facilities.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills and ability to create and maintain professional and productive working relationships with others including Facilities Department colleagues and school staff.
- Ability to utilize email, process maintenance requisitions and order supplies using Division-standard technology devices and applications (primarily Microsoft Office).
- Effective problem solving, decision making, organizing and planning skills.
- Knowledge of relevant building codes applicable to schools and other public buildings.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade and ability to maintain safe working conditions within a school environment.
- Knowledge of Workplace Hazardous Materials and Information Systems (WHMIS).
- Physical ability to carry out all responsibilities as outlined under duties and responsibilities.
- Ability to prioritize multiple demands and effectively manage time and to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a satisfactory Criminal Record Check for the duration of employment.
